Roy David “Rod” Roderick, 76, of Shelbyville formerly of Mt. Zion passed away at 11:22 a.m., Nov 12, 2011 in his daughter’s residence.

A celebration of Roy’s life will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.dawson-wikoff.com.   In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Roy’s beliefs, the family suggests memorials in his memory to be made to your family’s personal debt reduction or to the US Treasury for reduction of our national debt.

Roy was born December 3, 1934 in Tuscola, IL the son of Roy E. and Josephine (Wernsing) Roderick. He had served in the US Navy from 1953 – 1955 during the Korean War.   He married Delores Jean Jackson on November 22, 1956.   She preceded him in death on April 30, 1965. He was married to Bettie Adams West from 1966 until 1988. He was a foreman at Caterpillar Tractor Company and retired after thirty years of service. During his time with Cat, Roy had the respect and admiration of many of his co-workers, both management and union. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and enjoyed knowing that both during the year of his birth and the year of his death, the Cardinals were World Series Champions. He was an avid pool player and played in numerous leagues in Central Illinois. Roy also had a passion for fiscal responsibility and politics. He would share his opinion with all who he spoke to and felt strongly about a citizen’s right to express their opinions. He was appalled at our national debt and wanted all to know the need each one of us has for fiscal responsibility in controlling overspending and massive amounts of debt.

Surviving are his children: Bret Roderick of Monticello, IL, Stacy Roderick of Decatur, IL, and Susan Vermette of Mt. Zion, IL; grandchildren: Crystal Briggs and her husband David of Tolono, IL and Lauren York of Zeigler, IL; great-grandson: Von Roderick of Tolono, IL; brother: Emerson Roderick and his wife Sheila of Pawnee, IL, and nephew, Brian Roderick of Pawnee, IL.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two grandchildren.

STERLING SNYDER
Worked with Rod  at Caterpillar for a long time, in fact he trained me as I started in supervision. Rod  and I played on many a softball game thru the years...Had lost contact with him after he retired, but often thought of him and our friendship at Cat and playing ball. The best thing that i can say about Rod that I admired the most was he was a very honest and self-made man and you could always count on him to  have your back......ANOTHER ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS GONE.........BUT NOT FOGOTTEN.
